英検1級英作文：原子力発電
2021年第1回の英検1級受験時に、英作文・面接対策として自分が書き溜めた原稿を公開しています。
Grammarlyに頼りつつ書いたもので、完全に独学で勉強していたため、不自然な表現や文法的に間違った英文が含まれている可能性もありますので、ご注意ご了承ください。
実績としては、本番は英作文・面接どちらもこのブログで公開している原稿から、使える部分を流用したような格好で解答を行いました。
得点もそれぞれ英作文が745/850で9割近い点数が獲れ, 面接は615/850と合格ギリギリの水準ですが、2分スピーチセクションであまりの緊張から10秒近く言葉が出てこなかった所から原稿の内容を駆使した決死の、華麗なる逆転劇があってのものですので、内容としてはまあ悪くない水準にあると思います。

Agree or disagree: The benefits of nuclear power generation outweigh its disadvantages.

It has been one of the most contentious issues whether nuclear power generation should be encouraged in the world. Some people argue that nuclear power generation is indispensable for increasing energy demands all over the world, I personally believe that the drawbacks of nuclear power generation outweigh its benefits for the following three reasons.
Firstly, radioactive waste generated from nuclear power generation is a considerable threat to the global environment. It takes more than 50 years to detoxicate high-level radioactive waste. Encouraging nuclear power generation might lead to the depletion of storage and disposal sites, which will lead to inappropriate processes and radiation leakage.
Secondly, nuclear power plants carry the unavoidable risk of causing catastrophic accidents. It is clear that nuclear power plants might get intractable and uncontrollable in unpredictable natural disasters through the case of the accident in the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The radiation accidents cause irreparable damage to the life of people living on the site.
Finally, nuclear power generation is not sustainable in terms of energy sources as well as thermal power generation. Uranium, the fuel of nuclear power generation, is a finite resource that is impossible to avoid depletion in the future.
In conclusion, for these reasons, the risks of environmental damage, devastating accidents, and the depletion of energy sources, I think that the disadvantages of nuclear power generation outweigh its benefits.

原子力発電を奨励すべきかどうかは、世界で最も議論されている問題の1つです。世界中のエネルギー需要を増やすためには、原子力発電が必要不可欠であるという意見もありますが、私自身は、以下の3つの理由から、原子力発電の欠点が利点を上回っていると考えています。
第一に、原子力発電から発生する放射性廃棄物は、地球環境にとって大きな脅威です。高レベル放射性廃棄物の無害化には50年以上かかります。原子力発電を奨励することは、保管場所や処分場の枯渇を招き、不適切な処理や放射能漏れを引き起こす可能性があります。
第二に、原子力発電所は大事故を起こすリスクが避けられない。福島第一原子力発電所の事故を見てもわかるように、予測不可能な自然災害が発生した場合、原子力発電所は制御不能に陥る可能性があり、その結果、周辺住民の生活に取り返しのつかないダメージを与えることになります。
最後に、原子力発電は火力発電と同様にエネルギー源として持続可能ではありません。原子力発電の燃料であるウランは有限な資源であり、将来的に枯渇を避けることはできません。
結論として、環境破壊のリスク、壊滅的な事故、エネルギー源の枯渇という3つの理由から、私は原子力発電のデメリットがメリットを上回っていると考えます。
