英検1級英作文：服装の制限

2021年第1回の英検1級受験時に、英作文・面接対策として自分が書き溜めた原稿を公開しています。

Grammarlyに頼りつつ書いたもので、完全に独学で勉強していたため、不自然な表現や文法的に間違った英文が含まれている可能性もありますので、ご注意ご了承ください。

実績としては、本番は英作文・面接どちらもこのブログで公開している原稿から、使える部分を流用したような格好で解答を行いました。

得点もそれぞれ英作文が745/850で9割近い点数が獲れ, 面接は615/850と合格ギリギリの水準ですが、2分スピーチセクションであまりの緊張から10秒近く言葉が出てこなかった所から原稿の内容を駆使した決死の、華麗なる逆転劇があってのものですので、内容としてはまあ悪くない水準にあると思います。

Agree or disagree: The benefits of the dress code in society outweigh the disadvantages.

The rationale of the dress code in schools or offices has been debatable especially in Japanese customs. Some people claim that the rule is necessary to maintain social discipline, I personally think that the drawbacks of the dress code outweigh its benefits for the following three reasons.

Firstly, the dress code impedes people’s freedom of choice which is one of the fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Although the need to restrict too much incongruous appearances in public is understandable, basically, the strict dress code infringes freedom of choice.

Secondly, the restriction of fashion hampers creativity which contributes to innovative ideas. The inhibition by rules discourages people to develop creative ways of thinking and voluntary attitudes, it will eventually lead to rooting out ingenious talents.

Finally, the dress code has been one of the breeding places of gender stereotypes. For example, female students are demanded to wear skirts by the dress code in many Japanese schools, which has been one of the factors of the deep-rooted notion of gender distinction among people.

In conclusion, for these three reasons, hindering people’s freedom of choice, the development of ingenuity, and gender-equal ideology, I think the disadvantages of the dress code in society outweigh its advantages.

学校やオフィスでのドレスコードの合理性については、特に日本の習慣では議論の余地があります。社会の規律を維持するために必要だと主張する人もいますが、私個人としては、以下の3つの理由から、ドレスコードの欠点は利点を上回ると考えています。

第一に、ドレスコードは、憲法で保障された基本的人権の一つである、人々の選択の自由を妨げます。公衆の面前でのあまりに不自然な姿を制限する必要があることは理解できるが、基本的には、厳格なドレスコードは選択の自由を侵害する。

第二に、ファッションの制限は、革新的なアイデアを生み出す創造性を妨げます。規則による抑制は、人々が創造的な考え方や自主的な態度を身につけることを妨げ、結局は独創的な才能を根こそぎ奪ってしまうことになります。

最後に、ドレスコードはジェンダーの固定観念を生む原因のひとつになっています。例えば、日本の多くの学校では、女子学生は服装規定によってスカートを着用するように要求されています。このようなケースは、人々の間に深く根付いた性別の区別の概念の要因の一つとなっています。

結論として、「選択の自由」「創意工夫」「男女共同参画」という3つの理由から、ドレスコードは社会的にはメリットよりもデメリットの方が大きいと思います。
